Ricks Update

7 test shoots done now, so far I've shot a PCSO, a Beer Brewer, a Librarian, a Book Binder, NHS Eye Clinic Staff, a Smallholder and a Town Clerk. I've organised my first proper shoot for weekend after next, can't wait. And thanks to a play in the studio coupled with revisiting one of my favourite portrait photographers I have a really good idea of how I want my images to look.....and breath.

Saddleworth shoot

I'm off to Saddleworth this morning for another shoot. It's one of the trustees of the GMAVSG. All packed and ready. Just watched this video I was involved in roughly 5 years ago. The numbers of deaths is currently around 4,000 a year in the UK and rising year on year. Please watch it. Thank you.

I managed to get to Saddleworth despite my sat nav deciding not to speak to me. After the last 6 sessions I decided to try to keep it short, that didn't work, so four hours later I managed to convince the sat nav to guide me home. Just warming the chemicals now to process the film. Despite the best plans I am shooting tomorrow, Sunday and Monday as well. Wednesday I go to the group meeting to present the images shot  to date and to capture anyone feeling brave enough to take part.

Forget Me Knot

My name is Barbara Balmer I am a photography student, image maker and member of The Greater Manchester Asbestos Victim Support Group (GMAVSG).

I am working towards a series of images that visualise the nether world that the bereaved and grieving inhabit. Performance, time lapse and multiplicity captured on film by a pinhole camera represent some of the emotional turmoil of having to live in the surreal world after the beauty and normality of daily life has been destroyed by asbestos.

I asked the women of the GMAVSG if they were given one last conversation with their loved one what would they want to tell them. The film was shot as the conversation carried on.

The images are work in progress and haven't been retouched or cleaned up yet, as soon as the images of the group members are signed off I will post them.

A start to our blogging =]

I thought since i was the person setting this up that i would be the first one to make a start and show where i am up to with my work.

My work has developed to become based around the spaces in our landscapes that truck drivers fill with their temporary homes. I've become fascinated with how this massive, portable structures occupy a layby at the side of the road during the lonely hours and how there is someone inside unconscious and unaware of my presence as i take their photo.

Here's a couple of shots from my most recent night's out =]

These are just to post the work i've done so far, i will start writing up some more detailed stuff from my upcoming shoots and some of the techniques i used to shoot them in future posts.
